A Pride and Prejudice variation. Elizabeth Bennet Fitzwilliam was born and raised in Belgium, where she met and married Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam. When he is killed in battle, Elizabeth moves to England, to an estate near her uncle, Thomas Bennet, and his family. Meeting Elizabeth as her ship arrives on English shores, Fitzwilliam Darcy is determined to protect his cousin's widow from the rest of the Fitzwilliam family. Richard's family were not pleased when he married against their wishes, and they are determined to take out their fury on Elizabeth. When it is learned that Elizabeth is carrying Richard's child, what lengths will Darcy go to in protecting Richard's widow and child?

Darcy Beloved Cousin edition by Melanie Schertz a Lady Pat Weston Romance eBooks

This was an enjoyable book and entertaining, making one laugh and feeling a bit sad on a few occasions. I would rate it 3 and a half to 4 stars and is a completely new version or variation of Pride and Prejudice.

In this story, Lizzy is the daughter of Robert Bennet, brother of Thomas Bennet and was raised in Belgium. She meets Colonel Fitzwilliam (Richard) nursing him and they marry. She is wealthy in her own right, inheriting from her mother.
Lizzy and Richard marry, but his family are completely opposed and refer to Lizzy as a Harlot, Whore, etc. Lizzy becomes pregnant and Richard tells her to make sure that his parents do not get hold of her child. Richard dies on the battlefield and Lizzy takes his remains back to England and Darcy meets her at the Dock.

Lizzy has purchased an estate in Meryton, near her uncle and she keeps receiving harrassing letters from Richards parents and they specifically want their grandchild when it is born. Darcy and Lizzy get married to save her child (twins) from the clutches of Richard's parents.

The rest of the story is a series of dramas involving Caroline Bingley, the Matlocks and Lady Catherine and Anne de Bourgh. All of them cause problems, but the most touching, sad and different scenario is that Anne De Bourgh has been mentally damaged and is still about 10 years old, and this is why she wants Anne to marry Darcy, as he could be relied upon to keep the secret of Anne being mentally damaged from the Ton.

The ghost of Richard is a presence throughout the story and he helps soothe the differences among his family with regards to Lizzy. I particularly liked how Lizzy tells her children that Darcy is their Papa and Richard is their father.

Once again, an enjoyable read.

Other reviewers have detailed plot points so I won't do that here. What I like about Schertz's stories is that she puts different spins on them so the plots are each unique and not overly similar to other P&P fabric stories. This is a completely different setup from any others I've read. I liked the way the characters of the Bennet family were portrayed and I enjoyed a Collins-free story for a change. The actual love story between Darcy and Elizabeth is different, and maybe not as well developed as it could have been. The plot covers this, but if anything is missing it's that. One of the reasons they usually have such passion is because they clash and disagree. That's missing here, so maybe that explains the lack of heat a bit. But it's still a good story and worth the read.
Alas, it took a wrong turn along the way. It was kinda ok but half way through when the ghost showed up, it lost me. I endeavor to complete the books I start, so I achingly struggled my way through. While I have always known that the rich are different, this story devolved into smarmy treacle. The closest thing I have seen that comes close is KDRAMA wh

No-one payed for their dastardly misdeeds/ except through death and exile. For everyone else it was all sweetness and light. There is no way in hell I would have let those people anywhere near my children. There were too many unnecessary words that I nearly nodded off.

While the premise of the story was good the execution was really bad.
How does one write a story with an active ghost? It is normally poorly done, and here there was much bitterness to swallow with it, but the progression of the story we pick it up to read was well written and believable enough to warrant 3.5 stars one does not get to pick here. Don't open it unless you want to walk a different path as you sip your tea.
I loved the plot and where it took you and there were many twists and turns. Darcy and Lizzy wound up together but I liked the way it came about. I also liked the way Richard was always included in the novel after his death. It is a well written novel and completely different from others I have read.
Aunt Catherine is always up to no good as well as George Wichkam. Relations with family are important to Lizzy and she knows how to push Darcy's buttons to get him to accept the relations of his family once he had cut ties with them.
It was also good to see cousin Anne in a different light as well as her care giver. The Fitzwilliam Aunt and Uncle were characterized differently from the amiable that they are portrayed in most novels so that was another twist.
I enjoyed it tremendously and I hope you do also.
Thanks Melanie for an excellent read.
3 1/2 stars
Having wondered for a long while why an author hasn't written a book with a Richard/Lizzy plot I could hardly believe it when I found this one. This author has written an entertaining, fast-paced tale with lots of drama and never a dull moment. Darcy was sensitive, loving and truly 'the best of men'. Lizzy was a strong woman and I enjoyed her role. Their love story was beautifully done, though initially, a bit rushed. I understand it had to unfold this way for plot development. It seemed to happen too easily and of course in the middle of a crisis. I was just a bit disappointed that we didn't get more of a window into their life after marriage.
Part of the story was not quite believable to me, (Richard guiding them from beyond the grave) but altogether it made a very good read. Oft times the villians are dealt with much too easily. Leaving Collins out was a welcome change.
Ms. Schertz is very talented in the original plots she constantly comes up with and I really appreciate the way she keeps her price so reasonable. To me, her books have improved over some of her earlier ones.
